Aesthetic plastic surgeon Dr. Jennifer Walden has made quite a name for herself in an industry dominated by males. The Austin, Texas native recently returned to her Texas roots after having built a highly-successfully business in New York and more information click here.
Dr. Walden focuses exclusively on aesthetic plastic surgery. Breast augmentations, face-lifts, eyelid lifts and nose jobs can set a client back anywhere from $5,000 to $10,000. She also performs less invasive procedures like Botox injections and other soft-tissue fillers and learn more about Dr. Walden.
Dr. Walden doesn’t mind being a rarity. Of the over 8,000 board certified plastic surgeons in the U.S., less than 10 percent of them are women. And of those, only about 15 percent are members of the prestigious American Society of Board Plastic Surgery. She is only one of 12 practicing females in the state of Texas.
According to Dr. Walden, the field is so overwhelmingly dominated by men due to the years of training that is required. “You have five years of post medical school training and another one to two years of internships before you can become a surgeon.” This often means having to delay starting a family. Dr. Walden says the industry can also be a bit brutal due to the “boy’s club” mentality. She says she isn’t bothered by constantly having to prove herself, in spite of the culture and Dr. Walden’s lacrosse camp.
Another plus for women in the plastic surgery industry is that about 90 percent of their surgeries are performed on women “Women know another women won’t judge them.” Dr. Walden says she fully understands what other women are going through having given birth to twin boys. Your body changes and some parts sag and lose symmetry.
After making the move to Texas, she opened her own office. Although she was a bit worried on how she would be received, it didn’t take long for her schedule to fill up and Dr. Walden on Facebook.
